Capitol Exploration

We were in our nation's capitol for a special weekend - to lay Frank's mom to rest.

While the service wasn't scheduled until Monday, most of the family arrived Saturday evening.  Frank's niece (and family) live outside DC and hosted dinner at their home.

Allison and Andrea came in from San Francisco and we decided to do a little exploring in DC on Sunday.  The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum was the destination of choice.  And to get there we opted to ride the Metro.

Smithsonian Castle

Washington Monument (complete with a plane flying over)

Capitol Building

Replica of the first manned hot air balloon

Martian watch -for keeping time on Mars

Unceremoniously demoted to a "dwarf planet"!  Poor Pluto!

Symbol for Pluto blacked out!

One of the most interesting exhibits was on Amelia Earhart.
What an amazing woman - nurse, pilot, fashion designer/model, luggage designer (to name a few).

Apollo 17 display

Obligatory self-portrait before we head back to the metro.

Time to get ready for Alice's Celebration of Life Hungarian-themed dinner.
