Day 16-Sunset(less) Safari

Another tour coordinated before the trip started was a Sunset Safari with Grand Teton Adventures.

Roger, our guide from the day before picked us up right on time and we, along with a family of three, headed toward Gros Ventre area to see what we could see.  (We were crossing our fingers we'd get to see a moose!)  Until the afternoon, the weather in Jackson had been beautiful!  And now, the dark skies were rolling in...

See how well they blend into the sagebrush.

We then took a drive along Mormon Row.

Chisler or ground squirrel
(These critters don't have fuzzy tails like the squirrels we're used to seeing.)

After touring Mormon Row, Roger took us north along the Snake River to a spot where we would have dinner, al fresco.

Appropriately named Snake River in the middle of the picture.

Not a bad setting for dinner.

Our safari companions, visiting the US from China.

If you look closely, in the light green area in the middle of the picture, there is a large herd of elk.

More elk grazing near the road as we were leaving dinner.

Roger, still in search of the elusive moose, took us to an area with moose-conducive elements - water, willows, etc.  And it is also home to a local beaver family!
The large 'mound' is the beaver lodge.

One of the beavers swimming toward the lodge.

We were successful in seeing several different species of Wyoming wildlife during the evening.  Even though we traveled down Moose-Wilson Road, and through an area known for moose, we never did see one.  Perhaps the weather changes drove the animals in toward the woods.  Sadly, the weather also prevented a beautiful sunset we hoped for.

Stay tuned...leaving Wyoming and heading for Montana.
