We had a good drive from Kayenta to Flagstaff and since we entered a new time zone, we ended up with an extra hour! After consulting with the concierge, decided to find the best Mexican restaurant in town (where the locals go). It was Cinco de Mayo after all! After lunch we wandered through the historic downtown area.
Here are some pictures from drive:
In the middle of nowhere, there was a huge silo and train tracks.
As with many of the areas we've traveled through in the south west, these rocks just appear.
Sorry for the blurry picture. Along our drive we have seen several of these signs. It's a picture of cattle, with horns and udders! (At first we thought it was graffiti, but after seeing quite a few, we realized they were legit.) And after researching, there are in fact cows with horns.
We turned left...
We decided to visit Montezuma Castle, south of Sedona.
Red Rocks of Sedona
(From left to right: Castle Rock, Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte)
After spending time at the Castle, we headed north, along the Oak Creek Canyon road toward Sedona.
Looks like a little kid scribbled on our Nuvi! This was the "scenic" route back to Flagstaff.
Another sign we've seen frequently are for elk.
("Do these antlers make my butt look big?")
(Oh I just crack myself up!)
Back in Flagstaff and we 'were getting our kicks on Route 66'.
Paco says, "We are behind schedule!"
We enjoyed a yummy Cinco de Mayo lunch at La Fonda
The Super Moon
Lunch at Oak Creek Brewery while at Tlaquepaque in Sedona.
Tomorrow: The Grand Canyon!
